Ektomorf are certainly not afraid to let their influences show on 'Instinct', a likely follow-up to 'Roots', but Sepultura comparisons aside, this group has managed to come up with a tribal grooving metal slab that surpasses both the post-split Brazilian's efforts as well as that of Soulfly. Raw, primal energy surges through these massive grooves, giving songs like the stomping anthem 'Set Me Free' and the burly title track a tremendous presence. Pissed off and intently aggressive, Ektomorf are at their best when plowing through a chugging groove , but the addition of World sounds to music that is this over the top gives the band an edge that is unapparent in many metal ensembles. Forceful, pounding beats give time to thick meaty riffs throughout the course of this album, giving the listener an ample outlet for uninhibited hostility. After becoming acquainted with the thumping vehemence of 'Fuck You All', any metal fan should be ready for stage-diving action. In terms of production quality, this is a very up front and in your face album, with an excellent mix that is based in a tight, snappy drum sound and a meaty guitar tone that proves to be almost flawless in relaying the savage intensity of the band. A crushing collection of tracks tempered with a high degree of forcefulness, 'Instinct' shows that Ektomorf can assume the role of a dominant metal assemblage with a superior amount of sonic fortitude.
