Requiem throws a monkey wrench into the standard, patterned power metal formula as they include enough interesting surprises to keep your attention on 'Mask Of Damnation'. Vocalist Jouni Nikula has a tremendously powerful set of pipes and his ability to nail upper pitched notes with a great deal of push causes songs like 'Blinded' and 'Divine Illusion' to evolve past the atypical into a new realm of musical adventure. Nikula's voice moves up and down scales with quickness and ease on 'The Dying Ember', where the singer maintains a commanding presence. The group uses keyboards, courtesy of Henrik Klingenberg, as accompaniments. The guitars are upfront here that they remain the meat of the overall sound, causing Requiem to retain a heaviness that some power metal bands that employ keyboards seem to miss. From majestic, epic tracks like 'Shrine Of The Ocean' and 'The Rival's Spell', the listener is plunged into a world of fantasy as the group undertake dramatic musical illustrations to compliment the theme of the group's lyrics. Although Requiem take many cues from the power metal greats of the last ten years, the end result is a forceful and melodious album that contains a vibe that is quite their own. A markedly brilliant progression in the world of power metal.
