By this time, Callenish Circle have established themselves as a very known death metal act and keeping strong they now present 'Pitch Black Effects' an album which continues the bands ability to play death metal well but how interesting is the real question.

The album starts off well enough with 'This Day You Regret' and moves along throughout the album but it doesn't present anything Callenish hasn't done before in their songs. The structures of the songs all follow the same suite, heavy riff, somewhat of a chorus, nicely pulled off solo, heavy riff and then finish. Within this predictable structure though, the band still knows how to play some of the better death metal out there and fans certainly won't be disappointed.

I take a shot at the simplified song structuring that hasn't shifted much from their past releases but at the same time the band pull off their musicianship nicely and the album's production captures it in the best way. Solos in death metal can usually become contrived by Callenish Circle seem to keep the solos in line, nothing too wild and fancy nothing ridiculous but rather well executed, short winded and sounding smooth.

Though nothing on this album stands out greatly, it is a well played and well executed album by a band who knows the essentials of writing fine death metal.
