NYIA [nyja / nija] - according to Bruckner, this term means -to rot, decay-, but also -to miss, vanish, hurt etc.- NYIA was believed be unidentified pagan demon of death, of souls of dead people. Jakub Prokoszowic (1440) wrote that it was the god of Polish people. And Jan Dlugosz described NYIA as chronic deity of Polans (Polish tribe), something like the Roman Pluto. It was believed to be a god of the underground and a guard of souls leaving human bodies. People pray to it to get a better place after death.
